Day 3
Thursday
Well Carlos had told
us to plan on an 8:00 breakfast this morning, but by 7:00 I smelled
the eggs cooking. And sure enough Ophelia had the food on the table
by 7:15 or so. I felt badly that she had to heat the eggs up again….
But we just were not ready to eat yet… some were showering, and the
girls were not back at the house yet.
Anyway, we got all
packed up again (somehow our packs are not getting any lighter! Or
less full?) and headed out in the suburban for San Juanito. Climbed
and twisted our way up the mountain…. And yes here was SJ!! Seems
like the town just keeps growing and changing. We drove to Pasqual
and Socorro’s place. Our neighbors when we lived here. To ask them
if we could park our sub at their house while we are down south. They
were very happy to watch it for us. We didnt see Socorro who was
bathing…. Was a funny feeling to see our house and know that
someone else lives there…. Didnt have the nerve to go and ask if we
could come in! Merv walked over to the hotel to get some WiFi so he
could check emails… business you know!! And we had been without
service for a while now.
The children and I
walked around town a bit. Got a few snacky things for the train ride.
Headed to the train stop and waited maybe 10 minutes before it came.
Got on and have been traveling through the most amazing country ever.
Mountains, rivers, tunnels, canyons, bridges….. cactus, trees,
rocks, and ranches out in the middle of nowhere. This train twists
and turns and goes up an down through canyon country. At times, you
can look down and see at least one more layer of track beneath you.
We got off the train at Divisidero which is where there is a
beautiful awesome, almost beyond comprehension, view of the canyon.
Also many vendors selling their wares. Lots of baskets, rugs,
pottery, etc. and many selling food. This food is heated up over
barrels that have wood fires in them. The tops of the barrels act as
a griddle or comal to heat tortillas, chile rellenos, or gorditas up
on them. Also big cups of mixed fruit with chili and lime sprinkle
over it. YUM!! Our 15 minutes there went by quite rapidly!! but we
will be back to spend the better part of a day here next week.
On the train you can
go and stand between the cars and look out that way. Hang your head
out if you wish…. Seems like no one sees , or enforces the sign
that reads that no one is permitted to ride or stand in this area!!
Lots of time has been spent out there see the views from that angle.
We are scheduled to
arrive in El Fuerte aroung 7:30. We will get a motel and then
tomorrow head for Joel and Mabel Luna’s place. From there the plans
are a bit cloudy as it will depend somewhat on their schedule.
Little later:
we got into El
Fuerte around 7:15 and soon piled in a taxi to our hotel. Since we
have not had cell service nor wifi most of the time the last couple
days, we had not been able to call about a hotel. But we stopped at
Hotel Franco that Merv found when we got here and had some service
finally. The rooms are nice and clean. Very basic, but has A/C and
all we need. While we were waiting for Merv to purchase the rooms, we
noticed there was a little hamburger/ hot dog stand being set up
across the street. So thats where we got supper. $17 American dollars
fed us all well! Huge “Mexican” hamburgers with all manner of
fixings that we dont usually put on….. Very tasty! Now after
showers and some catching up here we will be good and ready for a
good nights sleep!!!
Sounds like you're having an awesome time!!!
