How does one begin to describe the feelings of the day? We were on the road by 3:50 or so this morning. Drove to the airport and parked the van. Sent a pin to Kevin, left the keys on the tire, and some cash to pay the parking fee. He will pick it up later today. Just felt like a long time to have it parked at the airport. Also quite early to have someone else take us.... we got to the gate, after a few bags were riffled through at security, with only time enough to get in line and walk on the plane. I had a container of expensive LemonGrass balm along. Thought it would be considered a solid, but they said it’s a cream and trashed it!😢 Long flight to Denver. Very glad to not have to go outside there. Snow on the ground and 30*. Had a nice layover with time to eat some breakfast. On to El Paso. Since we just have the backpacks, we walked off the plane, met the Uber car and piled in for a ride to the border. The children thought it took so long there. In reality, it really wasn’t a long time till our passports were stamped and permits were in hand. The ATM there swallowed Mervs debit card. Glad I have mine along! We decided to just frequent the ATMs instead of carrying huge amounts of cash on person. Got another Uber ride. Joel, Nicco, Erika and I in one car, the rest in a taxi. A ride through the city.... we are definitely in another country!!! Fast corners, houses that would be long ago condemned in the states.... but lots of modern big places too. Home Depot..McDonalds...
Boarded a bus 15 minutes after getting to the station. They sure have nice busses!! And they wait at the door with a bag of a sub sandwich, chips, and a set of ear buds! Oh and Pepsi or juice.
Bounce and jounce on rough roads passing big trucks very closely...lots of scrub brush, and mountains. Many pecan and apple orchards... skinny cows foraging amoung the brush. Little ranchos here and there. Lots of very humble dwellings with a fairly nice vehicle parked under a tree. We are seeing some irrigation wells and sprinkler systems. Some of that may be the Old colonist/ Mennonite influence? Fences made from branches and tree trunks of every size and shape... but tight barbed wire strung between them. Some rock fences. Nicholas slept a good 3 or more hours. Had slept very little since we got him up this morning. Now he is enjoying a movie on the bus!😱 we have arrived in the city of Chihuahua but are not yet at the bus station. We have stopped at some small stop here. Bought a cup of fruit/ melons to munch on. Oh yes back aways at Villa Ahumada we all got burritos and cold bottled coke for a total of $12!! Anyway, it will feel good to get off the bus and maybe walk around a bit without the heavy backpacks. Then bed will be very welcome tonight!!!!
Tomorrow is day 2!
