Sunday May 26
Up and around to another breakfast of hot dogs cut up with scrambled eggs. Beans of course and torts. Then I helped Mabel a bit with getting lunch ready. They were having potluck since we’re here. Joel took Merv and nicco and I to church in the little red car. The girls walked and Andrew went with Ervin on the moto. Joel was with us too I guess. They have a small block church. One by one the members arrived. I think there are maybe 12 members here. Two of those are under 40. After a couple songs led by whoever chooses them (men), we had a very long Sunday school. With every person who talked giving a mini sermon!😜 at the end of the Sunday school since it was the last lesson in the book the teacher then asked a few what they got out of this quarters lessons. Another song, an opening, and then Merv had a short sermon followed by a long addition by Joel Luna!😂 actually the addition wasnt so long as I thought it might be. There was some discussion where the meal should be. Decided here at Joel’s since there is more shade here. Everyone brought their food. Meatloaf, chicken, chicken salad, beans, torts, seviche, and 10 2 liter bottles of coke! Actually most were 2.5 liters. After lunch in true Mexican fashion we enjoyed the day that was warm and sweet as honey. The children laughed and played together in the lazy weather. The youth strung a hammock between some trees and chairs and played volleyball. About 2:00 someone brought a birthday cake from Los Mochis. So then we had cake and jello. And all that coke was gone!! People slowly took their leave and by 3:00 or so we were washing the mountain of dishes outside where it was cooler than the hot kitchen. Some took naps and some just relaxed. Joel and Mabel were turning the house upside down looking for some paper they need for Joselyn. Never did find it! When it cooled down a little Lucia and Eva were out cleaning their yard so cherith went over and helped a little. The boys got out the soccer ball, and soon all were playing soccer in the driveway. Joel, Mabel, Nicholas, Merv, and I went to the dam. Walked around there and ate fresh coconut. Yum. Back to the house where all the youth were sitting in a circle laughing and talking and telling jokes. With many gestures and much laughing. Soon they were teaching the Mexican youth to play Ninja. Around 9:00 Mabel got out leftovers from lunch for supper. Oh it’s been such a good time here. I was afraid our family would be bored this leg of the trip and would be grumpy about the heat and lack of hot water to shower etc. But I have not heard one single word of complaint. And they have been having so much fun learning some Spanish and teaching some English.
